How much does imported car registration cost?

Separate the administration fee from DVLA charges, import taxes, certificates, testing and other vehicle-specific costs.

Official sources checked 27 October 2026

The short answer

Our administration fee is £399, plus DVLA and HMRC charges. Certificates, tests, modifications and other vehicle costs are separate where needed.

Build a total from separate items

Register Your Car’s £399 fee covers registration administration. It is separate from DVLA fees, vehicle tax, any HMRC charges, and a Certificate of Conformity where required. Testing, modifications, transport and number plates can add costs too. Ask for an itemised quote so you can see which items apply and who charges for them.

A useful budget starts with the vehicle’s actual paperwork. Before comparing prices, gather its first-registration date, vehicle type, emissions evidence and import history. A low headline administration price is only one part of the amount you may need to spend before using the vehicle.

Government charges depend on the route

DVLA’s imported-vehicle guide lists a £55 registration fee alongside vehicle tax. The applicable tax position needs checking for the particular vehicle; do not choose a tax band simply because a similar model appears in a search result.

Import VAT and customs duty need a separate assessment. HMRC describes reliefs for qualifying circumstances, including some moves and returning vehicles. EU registration alone does not establish the amount payable on an import into Great Britain. Northern Ireland follows different arrangements. Ask your customs agent or HMRC to establish the treatment before relying on a budget.

Ask what a certificate price includes

If a Certificate of Conformity is needed, check whether a quoted price covers the document alone or arranging and supplying it. Our certificate prices can include arranging and supplying the document; they are not a promise to pass through a manufacturer’s charge at cost. Confirm availability and the price for your make and vehicle.

Request a written breakdown with confirmed items separated from estimates. Identify anything still awaiting document review and ask what could change it. Keep receipts and government payment records together. This lets you compare services fairly and avoids mistaking a provisional estimate for a final all-inclusive total.

Check the official guidance

Requirements can change. These sources apply to the points discussed above; your vehicle may need a different route.
