A registration service

We take care of everything. The only thing that can need the vehicle in person is a test it has to attend — an MOT, if yours needs one — and we tell you whether it does.

Your vehicle stays put

The registration itself is done on paperwork — no IVA test and no DVLA inspection, so nothing about it means driving or trailering the vehicle across the country. If yours needs an MOT, that is the one thing it has to attend, and we tell you whether it does.

£399 fixed admin fees

One figure for every vehicle — no hourly rates, nothing billed by the document, and nothing that moves once we have confirmed your import. That is our charge for the work; DVLA and HMRC charges are separate, and we set those out too.

Any age, anywhere in the EU

Car, van or motorcycle, from any of the 27 countries the form lists. Age changes the paperwork — a vehicle 10 years or older needs no Certificate of Conformity, a newer one does — but it changes neither our fee nor whether we can do it.

The Process

Your vehicle stays where it is for all four. You are involved twice: at the start, and again when we come back to you with what we need.

  1. You Tell us about your vehicle
  2. Us We quote you
  3. You You provide your details
  4. Us Your car is registered
  5. You Your V5C arrives

Step 1 — Tell us about your vehicle

Three short questions: the vehicle, where it is coming from, and how to reach you. About a minute.

The form asks what the vehicle is, the country it is currently registered in, and how to reach you. Nothing to upload, no reference numbers, no documents to find first. If something about your import does not fit the questions, ring us instead and tell us in your own words.

Step 2 — We quote you

Your quote appears on screen straight away. When you are happy to go ahead, you pay securely online there and then — our £399, plus whatever the DVLA and HMRC charge on top — and a member of the team takes it from there.

The form works out your quote as you fill it in, so there is no waiting to find out what this costs, and nothing to pay unless you decide to go ahead. When you are ready, you pay securely online, right there on the quote. Card details go to our payment provider, Stripe, never to this website. A member of the team then checks everything over, confirms your vehicle can be registered, and lets you know exactly what the DVLA and HMRC will charge on top of our £399. If it turns out your vehicle cannot be registered after all, our fee comes back to you in full.

Step 3 — You provide your details

We tell you exactly which documents we need from you. You send them over, and we check them before anything goes to the DVLA.

Once you have gone ahead, we send you a list of what we need and why each item is on it. Most of it is paperwork that already came with the vehicle. We check every document ourselves before it is submitted, and where something is missing or will not do, we tell you what to get instead rather than sending the application in and hoping. Your vehicle still has not moved.

Step 4 — Your car is registered

We prepare and submit the application, deal with the DVLA on your behalf, and keep you posted until your registration is issued.

We prepare the application, assemble and check the supporting documents, and submit it. From there the correspondence with the DVLA is ours to handle — queries, follow-ups, anything they come back on. We keep you posted until the registration is issued, and your vehicle has not moved from wherever it was when you first wrote to us.

Your V5C arrives

The DVLA issues a registration certificate for the vehicle and we post out your plates.

We deal with everything required throughout the process to ensure you get back on the road as soon as possible.

On top of that, you’ll owe

  • The DVLA’s first registration fee
  • Road tax for the vehicle
  • Number plates
  • A Certificate of Conformity, if yours needs one
  • Anything payable to HMRC on the import

These depend on your vehicle and how it was imported. We set out exactly what you’ll owe, and to whom — rather than publish a figure here that turns out to be wrong for your import.

Still needs customs clearance or a NOVA notification? Where your import does, we handle both in-house alongside the registration rather than passing you elsewhere. They sit outside our fixed registration fee, and we tell you what each one costs before you pay for it.

If we cannot register it, you get your fee back

You can pay as soon as you have your quote, or wait until we have checked your vehicle qualifies. Either way, if the registration cannot be done, our fee is returned in full — we are not going to keep money for a registration we could not deliver.

HMRC’s import duty and VAT are paid to HMRC rather than to us, so they are not ours to refund.

Age doesn’t decide whether we can help, or what our fee is. A vehicle 2016 or earlier is 10 years old and registers on paperwork alone; a newer one also needs a Certificate of Conformity, which we obtain and bill on at what it costs.

The questions we are actually asked

How long does it take to register an imported car with the DVLA?

We don’t publish a timescale, because it isn’t ours to promise. Once an application is with the DVLA the pace is theirs, and it varies with the vehicle, the country it came from and how complete the paperwork is. What we will do is prepare and submit the application and keep you posted until the registration is issued. If timing matters for insurance or a sale, say so when you enquire.

How much does it cost, and what else will I have to pay?

Our fee is £399, flat, whatever the vehicle — and it is separate from what the DVLA and HMRC charge. That covers the registration work: preparing the application, assembling the documents and dealing with the DVLA until your registration is issued. On top you will owe the DVLA first registration fee, road tax, and a Certificate of Conformity if your vehicle needs one, which we obtain and bill on at cost.

What documents do you need to register my imported vehicle?

It depends on the vehicle and the country it is currently registered in, so we would rather not hand you a generic checklist that turns out to be wrong for your import. Once we have confirmed your vehicle is eligible, we tell you exactly what we need from you and what we prepare ourselves. You do not need to gather anything to enquire: the form asks only about the vehicle, where it is coming from, and how to reach you.

My imported car is less than 10 years old — can you register it?

Yes. Our fee is £399 whatever the age, plus the DVLA and HMRC charges, so a newer vehicle costs no more to register with us. What changes is the paperwork: a vehicle ten years or older is exempt from IVA and type approval, while a newer one needs a Certificate of Conformity. We obtain that for you and bill it on at cost. Age changes the documents, not our fee.

Are you the DVLA, or could I just do this myself?

We are not the DVLA. Register Your Car is a My Car Import service, and you are free to apply to the DVLA yourself if you would rather. The fee buys you not doing it: the application prepared properly the first time, the supporting documents assembled, and someone else handling the correspondence with the DVLA on your behalf while your vehicle stays where it is.

When do I pay, and is anything charged on this website?

Only when you choose to go ahead. The form gives you a quote on screen, and when you are happy with it you pay securely online, there and then. Card details go into our payment provider Stripe’s page, never this website. We start work once our fee is paid, and if we cannot register your vehicle, our fee is refunded in full.

Do you handle customs clearance and the NOVA notification too?

Yes, where your import still needs them. Not every vehicle does — one already customs-cleared into the UK, or moved before the rules changed, may have nothing outstanding. Where it is needed we handle customs clearance and the NOVA notification to HMRC in-house rather than passing you to somebody else, alongside the DVLA registration. Those are separate from our £399 registration fee, which covers the registration work; we tell you exactly what your import needs and what each part costs before you pay for it.

Can you start if the car is still overseas and hasn’t shipped yet?

You can enquire either way, and plenty of people do so before the vehicle has shipped. Where the vehicle has got to changes what is needed and when, so tell us in your enquiry or on the phone. We will confirm what your situation needs, and what can be started before it arrives, without anything being payable in the meantime.

Will my imported car get a UK registration number and a V5C?

Yes. Registration is how the vehicle is recorded with the DVLA, given a UK registration mark and issued with a V5C registration certificate in the registered keeper’s name. Which mark it receives is the DVLA’s decision, not ours and not yours. If you are planning to put a private plate on the vehicle afterwards, mention it when you enquire so we can factor it into what we tell you.

Do you register imported motorcycles and vans too?

The service covers vehicles imported from the EU at any age, and the form asks for a make and model rather than assuming a car. If yours is a motorcycle, van or something less usual, send it through and we will confirm whether we can register it. Nothing is payable until we have told you one way or the other.
