Registering an Irish vehicle with the DVLA

Your vehicle stays in Ireland, or wherever it has got to. We deal with the DVLA on your behalf for a flat £399 — plus DVLA and HMRC charges.

Ireland is one of the 27 EU origins this form accepts.

The same service, whether it is in Ireland or already here

Nothing about the country changes what we do or what we charge. It changes which documents arrive with the vehicle — and that depends on the vehicle too.

  • £399, flat

Our charge for the registration work, the same for an Irish vehicle as for any other, plus DVLA and HMRC charges. What that covers.

  • It does not move

A paperwork registration, without the need to visit us, so it can happen while the vehicle stays where it is standing — in Ireland, in transit, or already on UK ground. It makes no difference to whether we can register it. An MOT, if yours needs one, is the exception: that is a test the vehicle attends, and we tell you whether yours does.

  • Any age

A vehicle 2016 or earlier is 10 years old and registers on paperwork alone. A newer one also needs a Certificate of Conformity, which we obtain and bill on at cost.

Four steps from here

You are involved at the start, and again when we come back to you with what we need for your Irish import.

  1. Tell us about your vehicle

Three short questions: the vehicle, where it is coming from, and how to reach you. About a minute.

  2. We quote you

Your quote appears on screen straight away. When you are happy to go ahead, you pay securely online there and then — our £399, plus whatever the DVLA and HMRC charge on top — and a member of the team takes it from there.

  3. You provide your details

We tell you exactly which documents we need from you. You send them over, and we check them before anything goes to the DVLA.

  4. Your car is registered

We prepare and submit the application, deal with the DVLA on your behalf, and keep you posted until your registration is issued.

The process in full

Getting the paperwork right for your Irish import

Every import is a little different. What’s needed depends on the vehicle as much as on Ireland — its age, whether it needs a Certificate of Conformity, and how it was brought into the UK. You don’t need to work any of that out yourself.

Once you go ahead, we let you know exactly what we need for your vehicle and help you get hold of anything you’re unsure about. We check each piece as it comes in, prepare the rest ourselves, and make sure it all fits together before anything goes to the DVLA.

My Car Import has been importing vehicles into the UK for years and handles customs, IVA and DVLA work in-house. If your Irish import has something unusual about it, ring 01332 810442 — the awkward ones are usually the ones we have seen before.

Does a vehicle from Ireland need a Certificate of Conformity?

Only if it is newer than 2016. The country it is registered in makes no difference — its age does.

A vehicle 2016 or earlier is past type approval and registers on paperwork alone. A newer one needs the manufacturer’s Certificate of Conformity, and My Car Import obtains it for you and bills it on at what it costs. It is not part of our £399 fee.

What the certificate costs depends on the make, not on Ireland — it is bought from the manufacturer, and they charge the same wherever the vehicle happens to be standing. See the cost by make, with the date those figures were last checked.
